Taboo For Tourists – Habits That Should Be Given Up Before A Journey
By Iuri Tarabanov

It should be remembered that from the moment of crossing of any country’s border the jurisdiction of this country, i.e. force of its criminal, civil, administrative laws and rules, applies to the tourists. It’s wrong to consider that sojourn in a country as a foreign guest will give you the opportunity to escape punishment for the infraction of a law or to receive a kind of special status.

The ignorance of the law does not release from the responsibility, even if it’s a law of another country.

Habitual style of behavior, clothes and some expressions can be interpreted as disrespectful, violating laws and orders, as offensive to religious and national feelings of people around you.

Tourists often have to pay enormous fines for such actions, to which they would never pay attention being at home. It’s possible to pay a significant sum of money, and even be taken into custody, for smoking at a non-prescribed place or for a scrap of paper thrown out on the street.

Take for example a natural will of every tourist to take pictures or to record everything. In some African and Arab countries it’s prohibited to take pictures of office building, policemen, people in uniform and also women. In general while photographing it’s better preliminary inquire politely about permission to do so.

On arrival abroad it’s recommended to acquaint yourself with the way foreigners travel about the country, local trade rules, journey in public transport and strictly follow them.

Tourists are often reminded that in many Muslim countries norms of behavior are determined by shariah laws, which strictly regulate men-women relationship, prohibit drinking of alcohol and etc. In case you found yourself in a Muslim country at the time of Ramadan (fast month), abstain from eating and smoking at public places in the daylight. In many Muslim countries women are not allowed to appear in open clothes. In such countries austere dress will allow to avoid heightened inhabitants’ attention and conflicts.

In order to avoid appearance of undesirable incidents it’s recommended to:

- display friendliness to the inhabitants, reckon with their way of life

- be patient, not to insult, not to raise voice, not to lower the dignity of inhabitants, not to admit insulting expressions with respect to the leader of the country of residence

- respect local customs and traditions, not to display arrogance and disregard to local culture

The administration of one of Indian states made for tourists its own code of conduct on 20 pages. According to these rules men are not allowed to touch the fair sex in public.

The only exception concerns aged and sick women. Such a way of expression of feelings as embraces and kisses of young people in public generally is considered as absolutely unacceptable mode of action.

At the door of any Indian temple visitors will be asked to take shoes off. In India it’s not accepted to swim naked, yet it’s possible to bargain with taxi drivers. In China it’s impossible to catch passing car: self-employed taxi driving is prohibited. Also in this country after finishing a meal you can’t leave chopsticks stuck into the food and all the more – stuck up from a cup. You shouldn’t make a present of watch, because it’s associated with the word “death”. The bunches of four or nine flowers are not given to Japanese – this number is considered as an unlucky one. In Italy you can’t swim in a fountain, in Turkey you will be fined for careless handling with Turkish lira. In Yemen on penalty of the capital punishment the import of pork products is prohibited.
